THE MIGHTY MITE
Periodically, there are cries in our society to get rid of the humble penny since it is viewed as having no purchasing power. However, Lutheran Women in Mission would disagree. Since 1942, they have seen how small coins can combine to do great things in the name of Christ. Mite boxes were selected based on Mark 12:41-44 as the vehicle by which regular contributions of offerings above and beyond the support given to one’s congregation and the Synod would be collected. The LWML Mite Box has changed in color and design over the years, but what has never changed is the dedication of freely given offerings for the purpose of reaching out to others with the Good News of Jesus. Societies keep 10% of their mite money and send the remainder to the Zone where 25% is retained for local mission grants and the rest is forwarded to the District. Twenty-five percent of the mites sent to District are remitted to the National LWML for mission grants and the remaining 75% is used to fund the District’s mission work. Throughout the decades, Lutheran women have stepped out in faith, setting a mission goal, adopting grants and trusting God to move the hearts of His people to give generously to LWML to proclaim the Gospel. Praise the Lord for what He has done!...$21,266,350 for national grants and a total of over $75,000,000 when district grants, bequests, and anniversary offerings are added to that So the next time loose change is a drag on your pocket or purse, consider putting it in a mite box (available in the narthex) along with a prayer for world missions. When it is filled, give it to any LWML member or better yet…BRING IT ALONG WITH YOURSELF TO AN LWML MEETING! Visit this link for a Monthly Mite Calendar to help motivate your giving:
We are excited to be back for another year of preschool at Concordia Little Lambs. The staff, preschoolers, and families are thankful for God’s faithfulness and the commitment of the congregation to the preschool program. Our preschool families came to an Ice Cream Social on Thursday, August 19. This was a parent orientation meeting, and a time for the preschooler and families to get acquainted with one another before school begins. Our first day of class for the four-year-old class is Tuesday, September 7. The first day for the three-year-old class is Thursday September 9. We currently have 18 students enrolled in the four-year-old class, and 6 students in our three-year-old class. There are still openings for both programs. Children must be potty trained and will be age three or four by September 1, 2010, for the new term that meets from September through May. Information and application forms are available in the narthex, or by calling the school (708) 795-7563. Thank you for your donations to L.E.A.F. (Lutheran Education Assistance Fund) Families has been encouraged by that fund to enroll their children in Lutheran Schools. Thank you for your continued donations to our Cartridges For Kids Program, which recycles cell phones, and used ink cartridges, as well as video games, ipods, pda’s, dvd movies, digital cameras, gps systems, and laptops. Thanks for saving Campbell’s labels for Little Lambs this past year. Please continue to save the UPC’s so that we can redeem them for needed equipment. Last year, we were able to purchase a new outdoor sand and water table for our school with the proceeds from your donations. Most importantly, we covet your continued prayers throughout the school year as the Lord continues to provide what is needed to allow Concordia Little Lambs to be a continued light in the community. In Him, Shari Yff, Director, Concordia Little Lambs Preschool
PASTOR’S NEWS LETTER Greetings… I got a call from my Brother Mike the other day to tell me how much he enjoys coming to the Chicago area because our people are always so nice to him. I told him he must be confused…no..I really didn’t. As a Pastor, I’ve been blessed with some of the most wonderful people of God anywhere. Since returning from vacation, I’ve had 3 church-related funerals. In all three cases, our church families have shown a strong faith in our Lord Jesus and their church family has really stepped up with prayers and support. p.s. Those who have helped out with music and office work in Carol’s absence have been super! Thanks, Pastor
